I'm thinking of doing the same thing. Yesterday I mounted cig power outlet on my VStar 650 in hopes of using my GPS for trips this summer. It also has MP3 capability so I hope to be able to listen to tunes also. Last night I was on the internet and…

We checked the risers out on ebay and I'm going to do it. We were going to wait and see if I was going to get the 950 V-star first, but since hubby got laid off, I'm going to keep her. Doesn't break my heart cause I just love the little 650 so much.…

Robin, you asked that I get back with you on the risers I was going to get. Well, they are just as good as I hoped they'd be. I really like the pull back... and the rise is fine also. Got mine off ebay and I think it was just $39....

Sixty degrees? Great!! Like Dion it as nowhere near 60F here, but Saturday went to +38F and that felt almost like T-shirt weather. My riding partner and I loaded his bike on my trailer and took it to the dealer for tune up and installation of a new…

Yep, this summer I rode a poker run in Hayward, WI. Hayward is 357 miles from home, so we rode up on Friday, did the poker run (125 miles with four stops) on Saturday, then rode a different road back home on Sunday. All together it was more than 840 miles over three days. It requires a real good touring seat on the bike, or a tail that is already used to it, or a little of both. My son rode with me on his 1200 Sportster and we stopped regularly to rest our tail-bones. Had a great time.

As far as the V Star 650 handling a trip of that distance, mine is a 2002 with 35,500 miles on it. I just replaced the clutch because it was starting to slip a little, but the bike rides like a new one and I trust it completely.

On a long ride, I do the same things anyone should do, like check the oil level every day, keep an eye on tire pressures, and of course, clean the windshield often. The bike was described to me when I bought it as a "work horse", and it is definitely that. Just keeps going and going, with no real problems.

According to Google Earth it is 189 miles (a long half day) ride between DeWitt, IA and Hannibal, MO. By coincidence, my wife and her best girlfriend go on a "3-day weekender" trip every fall. They try to travel only on 2-lane roads and stop for yard sales, historic markers, and such. This years' trip was about 6 weeks ago, and their overnight target area was Hannibal, to see as many Samuel Clemens (Huckberry Finn & Tom Sawyer) sites as possible. She said it was a beautiful trip by car in the fall colors.

Back to the ride to Deal's Gap, I'll be happy to stay in touch as plans develop. My son Chad (married 36 yr old father of four) was going with me, but that looks doubtful now, so "as we speak" you are the first that sounds interested. I will keep in touch ... ;^)
