Since 1994 I have lived on a sailboat. Crossed the Atlantic Ocean six times and whilst on the other side of the pond became best buddies with two different American couples.
All of us getting older (but no wiser) got tired of being thrown around at sea. The two American couples swallowed the anchor, sold their boats and bought houses back home (Ohio and Tennessee). Then they said, `Come visit´ . So we did. On our first visit to Ohio in 2006, we thought we really ought to see some of the country. So we bought a 1980 Honda CX500 with only 16,000 miles on the clock off one careful owner. It cost us $1,000. After putting two new tyres (UK) tires (US) and replacing the exhaust, we rode that bike out to the Tetons, Wyoming and back to Ohio. Sold the bike the day before flying back to the UK for $950!
Fell in love with both bikes and the USA:
Following year, we shipped a brand new Guzzi out to Canada.
In 2007, we rode 9,500 miles then last year, 2008, we rode 9,850 miles - from Toronto (where we store the bike) to California - including riding through Death Valley and over the Tioga Pass to Yosemite.
From Cali, we headed up to Seattle to see a British friend who now lives there and then back to Ohio via Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan (our final day on last year´s trip was from Wisconsin across the Upper Peninsula, across the Mackinac and down through Michigan to Ohio - a total of 540 miles - our highest daily mileage and half of that through torrential rain and thunderstorms. Not an experience I ever want to repeat!)
Trip all booked for this year - end of May. Plan to follow as much of R66 as we can and then explore Nevada - The ET Highway, The Loneliest Road in America and the Great Basin Scenic Highway 93. If we make it to the ET highway, then I´m going to change the theme on my homepage to the Area 51 template!
