Yamaha V-star exhaust

Has anyone had experience with modifying stock V-star 650 exhaust. I just can't afford new exhaust and have read so many websites about drilling them out. I did the three hole mod and it changed it a little. Still sounds like a sewing machine. Anyone out there have any ideas. I don't want to pull the entire baffle, that would be too much. There is a website for 650 owners, http://www.650ccnd.com/. It's got a lot of ideas. Just wondered if anyone had some suggestions or warnings

His 650 has straight pipes and sounds good. He even takes the baffles out sometimes. Then it's too loud, but what it too loud for a 19 year old!!. Just didn't want to drop couple huindred yet.
